Quilt for Mitch by Sharon

I decided last year that I would do a new (bigger) quilt for Mitch for his 18th birthday.  At Glenrose last year, I bought a layer cake (10" squares) and then spent a few months on and off deciding what to do.  Early March I stumbled across a tutorial, I think on Pinterest, on a wonky cross block using a special ruler.  This fit the bill for me (something easy and something to use the layer cake) so I sent off for the ruler from Crafty Gemini in the US.

Once the ruler arrived, I checked out how to use it on You Tube - simple! This is the effect it creates when you cut 2 10"squares with the slicer....

And here are the first 2 blocks all sewn up.....

I decided as I was sewing the blocks up that I would have a go at "Quilt As You Go" to put the quilt together.  So, back to Pinterest I went to search on how to do this type of quilt construction.  It looked and sounded easy enough so I had a go - and below is the result, 42 blocks in all.  As I was cutting & sewing, I had no idea how I would lay them all out or join them so I did half one way and reversed the slicer for the last half of the blocks and then once they were all sewn, spent an hour or more trying to get them into some sort of pattern😤.  Well, it will do and I think it turned out pretty good considering I was doing this on the fly.

I had a deadline (end of June) and it looked like I just might make it as I seemed to be on a bit of a roll, but, organising our trip away, a birthday and the oldies moving delayed me a little bit so as a result, I am still working on the quilt - 1 month behind schedule😞.  Over the last few days, I was determined to get back to it and have been working on the borders (again, back to Pinterest & You Tube to see how to do QAYG borders).  Anyway, side borders are now attached with the quilting done being inspired by the wonky cross pattern on the blocks - I just quilted in the ditch so I basically copied that design along the borders.

Tonight, I have just completed the separate parts for the top and bottom - 4 corners and 2 main pieces and they will be next to be attached later this week.

Top put together....

& now added to the quilt....(almost there😊)

& now it is finished (and being used on Mitchell's bed as we speak)......
