Sashiko & Dresden Cushion by Sharon

In a couple of weeks, I am off again on a quilting retreat to Bribie.  Our challenge for this retreat was to make a cushion.  My challenge was to create something no-one else would have thought of and something that looked a bit flash (the other ladies do spectacular work and I wanted to make something that little bit special to try to be close to their league).

Anyway, my thinking cap went on a couple of months ago and I decided to incorporate some sashiko into my cushion and also some type of sewing/patchwork as well.  In the end, I decided to create (all my own design) a simple yet effective sashiko fan which co-ordinated well with a dresden plate design.

I then had to find the right fabric and work out how to transfer a design onto the fabric (it turns out that is very easy - using transfer paper bought online from the same shop that had the plain navy fabric).  The co-ordinating fabric I lucked out with and found a bundle of fat quarters at Spotlight that perfectly matched my navy sashiko fabric.

I am pretty pleased with how it turned out tho my zip could have been better (but I am not unpicking the whole thing to try to make fix it up so it will have to do - besides it's on the bottom of the cushion and who is going to see it anyway).  My cushion turned out quite effective I reckon and didn't take me as long as I thought it would.  Luckily Mitch has an old compass set that I have claimed to work out my dresden pieces so I had a bit of fun playing around with quarter circles in the process.
