This work is a story across generations and across decades. My Mum started this embroidery when she was a teenager in the 1950s. It became an unfinished project banished to the cupboard (as happens with so many of our craft projects!!) . When I was a teenager in the 1980s it got brought out of the cupboard and gifted to me.
The work was printed motifs on beautiful linen. The original intent was to only embroider parts of each motif and leave parts of the printed motifs visible. I decided that I would embroider over all of the printed motifs. Thus started my long journey with the project.
Last year my Mum celebrated her 80th birthday. I decided the perfect present would be to gift the finished embroidery back to her. I hadn't touched the project for decades, so there was quite a lot of work to do. Thus started many nights over many months embroidering in front of the TV. Mum was very excited and surprised when she opened her present. It is now hanging proudly in her dining room.
